Sarracenia purpurea -Appalachicola National Forest

Back to Wild Sarracenia Main Page

If it wasn't for the orchid-purple flowers, S. purpurea would be hard to spot.  Here in Appalachicola National Forest, they grow by the side of the road.  The frequent mowing of the roadside seems to provide them with more sunlight, resulting in robust plants.

It's hard to see the scale of these mature plants, this huge clump is over a foot across.  Fresh spring pitchers open in amazing shades of oranges and yellows, deepening to red as they mature.

The color of the flowers ranged from a pale, almost rosy-pink, to a deep orchid-purple.  Pictured is a typical flower of S. purpurea venosa.
